A powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, triggering a tsunami with waves up to 4 metres high, damaging infrastructure, and prompting evacuations across the Pacific region.

Several people were injured in Kamchatka, with local authorities reporting that some individuals were hurt while fleeing buildings, including one person who jumped from a window and another injured inside a new airport terminal.

Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov described it as the strongest earthquake in decades and urged residents to follow safety protocols. Regional emergency minister Sergei Lebedev confirmed the tsunami and advised people to move away from coastal areas.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 19.3 km and was centered 119 km east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. A strong aftershock of magnitude 6.9 followed shortly after.

In Japan, which still bears the scars of the devastating 2011 tsunami, authorities issued evacuation orders for parts of the eastern coast. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of tsunami waves up to 3 metres, and national broadcaster NHK urged residents to quickly move to higher ground.

Footage from Japan’s northern Hokkaido region showed residents and factory workers evacuating to elevated areas.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System also issued a regional alert, warning of potentially hazardous waves within three hours. Waves over 3 metres were possible in Russia and Ecuador, with 1–3 metre waves predicted for Japan, Hawaii, Chile, and the Solomon Islands. Smaller waves were expected in many Pacific coastal areas, including the U.S. West Coast.

In Hawaii, authorities issued evacuation orders for low-lying coastal zones. The Honolulu Department of Emergency Management urged residents to “Take Action,” warning of destructive waves.

Russia’s Ministry for Emergency Situations reported that the port and a fish processing plant in Severo-Kurilsk on Sakhalin Island were partially flooded, but the local population had been safely evacuated.

According to the Russian Academy of Sciences, this was the most powerful earthquake to hit the region since 1952. Danila Chebrov, Director of the Kamchatka Geophysical Service, noted that while the shaking intensity was not as severe as the magnitude suggested due to specific epicentral conditions, aftershocks were ongoing and being closely monitored.

Kamchatka and Russia’s Far East lie along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a highly seismically active zone known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
