A new Australian study has found that most young Australians still want to have children, despite the country’s record-low birth rate.,

However, researchers say trust in public institutions is becoming a major factor influencing family planning decisions.

The study revealed that nearly 79 per cent of young people who have confidence in Australia’s institutions hope to become parents, compared with just 59 per cent of those who lack that trust.

Researchers said concerns about housing affordability, rising living costs and childcare remain important, but confidence in healthcare, education, childcare services and government support also plays a significant role.

Around seven in ten young Australians surveyed said they still hope to have two or three children, challenging the belief that younger generations no longer want families.

Experts say rebuilding trust in public institutions, alongside improving economic security, will be essential if Australia hopes to reverse its declining fertility rate.
