US President Donald Trump has temporarily paused tariffs on Canada and Mexico for 30 days in exchange for border and crime enforcement concessions.
Trump announced that Canada agreed to strengthen its northern border security and take action against fentanyl trafficking.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed the pause, highlighting Canada’s $1.3 billion border plan, increased personnel, and a new Canada-US Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime.
Trump also held discussions with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who agreed to deploy 10,000 soldiers to curb fentanyl smuggling and illegal migration.
High-level negotiations between US and Mexican officials will take place over the next month, with Trump expressing optimism about reaching a new agreement.
Meanwhile, Sheinbaum rejected White House claims about Mexico’s ties to criminal organizations and ordered countermeasures to defend Mexico’s trade interests.
