U.S. President Donald Trump has issued an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on goods imported from India, citing India’s direct or indirect importation of Russian oil. This is in addition to previously announced 25% tariffs, intensifying the economic pressure on New Delhi.
The decision comes amid growing tensions in U.S.-India relations, which have reached their most serious point in years following the failure of trade negotiations between the two countries.
The announcement also coincides with reports that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit China later this month for the first time in over seven years, a move that could further strain ties with Washington.
The White House’s latest action follows recent meetings in Moscow by Trump’s top diplomatic envoy, Steve Witkoff, aimed at urging Russia to agree to a peace deal in Ukraine. Trump has also warned of higher tariffs on Russia and secondary sanctions against its allies should President Vladimir Putin refuse to end the war.
