Trump corrects error, reposts tariff letter to Sri Lankan president

U.S. President Donald Trump has reissued his official letter to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, correcting a previous version that mistakenly spelled the President’s first name as “Aruna.”

Dated 9th of July 2025, the revised letter confirms the U.S. will impose a 30% tariff on Sri Lankan exports starting 1st of August citing longstanding trade imbalances and “very persistent” tariff and non-tariff barriers on Sri Lanka’s part.

Despite the strong tone, Trump described it as a “great honor” to address President Dissanayake and expressed openness to improved trade ties. He said tariff rates could be reconsidered if Sri Lanka removes its own trade restrictions.

“We look forward to working with you as your Trading Partner for many years to come,” Trump wrote, promising, “You will never be disappointed with the United States of America.”
