Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s meeting with Donald Trump at the White House ended in a heated clash over the war with Russia, driving relations between the two leaders to a new low.
Zelenskiy had hoped to secure continued U.S. support, but Trump and Vice President JD Vance accused him of showing disrespect, leading to his abrupt dismissal from the meeting.
A key minerals agreement between Ukraine and the U.S. was left unsigned, jeopardizing hopes for stronger ties.
European leaders quickly backed Zelenskiy, with Germany and France reaffirming their support. Britain is set to host a meeting with European leaders and Zelenskiy to discuss security measures for Ukraine.
Tensions escalated when Vance pushed for diplomacy, while Zelenskiy insisted that Russian President Vladimir Putin could not be trusted.
Trump accused Zelenskiy of being unwilling to negotiate peace, stating, “He can come back when he is ready for peace.” He later told reporters that Ukraine must recognize it is losing the war and be willing to compromise.
The fallout threatens U.S. aid to Ukraine, with Trump warning of a potential withdrawal of support.
Efforts by European leaders to secure security guarantees from the U.S. have also been undermined.
Meanwhile, Ukraine remains heavily reliant on foreign military aid as it continues to fight Russia, which still controls about a fifth of Ukrainian territory.
