Tree planting drive launched along Colombo’s Marine Drive

A tree planting and conservation project was launched yesterday (5th of June ) along Colombo’s Marine Drive, from Kollupitiya Railway Station to Wellawatte, in celebration of World Environment Day.

The initiative, implemented by the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat Office, was supported by the President’s Media Division.

To mark the beginning of the project, 1,600 Takkada (Scaevola taccada) saplings were planted, with plans to increase this number to 6,000 in the near future.

The project involves participation from state institutions, private organisations, and members of the public.

Takkada, a plant species listed as threatened in the Red Data List, is highly resistant to saline conditions, making it suitable for coastal conservation efforts.

Scaevola taccada typically grows as a dense shrub reaching 5 to 6 feet in height, offering both environmental benefits and aesthetic value in urban settings.

The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Police (Environmental and Traffic Divisions), Sri Lanka Railways, the Road Development Authority, Urban Development Authority, and the Colombo Municipal Council.
