The US Embassy in Colombo has rejected local media reports claiming that a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) team had arrived in Sri Lanka to assist in investigations into an alleged USD 2.5 million cyber fraud involving Treasury funds.

In a statement, an embassy spokesperson said, “No such deployment has occurred,” directly dismissing the reports.
The spokesperson further explained that, as part of standard international practice, the United States maintains an FBI Legal Attaché office at its embassy in Colombo to coordinate law enforcement cooperation with Sri Lankan authorities when required.
The embassy also stressed the importance of accuracy in reporting, particularly in matters involving sensitive security and criminal investigations.
Earlier, several local media outlets had reported that an FBI team had been deployed to Sri Lanka to assist in probing an alleged cyber theft of USD 2.5 million in Treasury funds, along with a separate USD 625,000 payment allegedly diverted from a transaction intended for US postal authorities.
