Train derailment prompts repairs to track and overhead infrastructure

Around 100 metres of railway track and overhead infrastructure will need repairs after a partial train derailment near Clifton Hill station in Melbourne’s inner north on Sunday night.

The derailment occurred at approximately 10.30pm and continues to disrupt services, causing frustration for commuters.

A 500-tonne crane was used yesterday to remove the faulty carriage from the tracks.

According to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), the derailment caused significant damage to both the track and overhead lines.

As a result, parts of the Hurstbridge and Mernda lines will remain suspended until at least Monday.

Replacement buses are operating between Eltham and Parliament for Hurstbridge line passengers, and between Reservoir and Parliament for Mernda line users.

Trains are still running between Mernda and Reservoir, but delays are expected.

Planned maintenance work means buses will continue to replace trains between Heidelberg and Eltham until 24th of July .

Long queues were seen at Reservoir station this morning as commuters waited for replacement buses.

Some commuters voiced frustration over the disruption, calling for better compensation and service management.

The ATSB and the Office of the Chief Investigator have launched a joint investigation into the derailment.

A preliminary report is expected within two months, with a full report to follow after the investigation concludes.

Metro Trains CEO Raymond O’Flaherty said a decision on passenger compensation will be made at the end of the month.

In the meantime, efforts are being made to minimise disruption and maintain passenger travel on affected lines.
