A lion cub born at the Werribee Open Range Zoo in Victoria has died at just three weeks old.
The zoo confirmed that the cub suffered from kidney problems after its mother unexpectedly refused to breastfeed.
Signs of lethargy and weakness prompted an emergency examination by specialist veterinarians, who determined that the cub had no chance of recovery.
To prevent further suffering, the cub was euthanized on compassionate and humane grounds.
