Traffic fine payments to go digital with ‘Govpay’

The public will soon be able to pay traffic fines through Govpay, the newly launched official online payment platform for government services, according to a top official from the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA).

ICTA Board Member Harsha Purasinghe confirmed that they are working to enable this service, which will provide significant relief to motorists.

Purasinghe announced at a recent forum in Colombo that traffic fines would soon be payable via the platform, with the groundwork already completed and a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) set to be signed soon. Govpay was introduced by the Sri Lankan government to facilitate secure and convenient digital transactions for various services, including taxes, fines, utility bills, and educational fees.

Since its launch, the platform has expanded from 16 to 25 government organizations, with new institutions being added weekly. Purasinghe also reflected on the challenges faced by the new ICTA Board, which had to overcome significant hurdles, including the agency’s near closure. Despite these difficulties, the board, led by Dr. Hans Wijeyasuriya, has worked tirelessly to drive digital transformation in Sri Lanka, with members volunteering their time without salaries.
