Tourism earnings reach 5-Year high in January 2025

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has made a strong start in 2025, with earnings surpassing US $400 million for the first time in over five years, highlighting the significant potential of the sector after overcoming multiple crises.

In January 2025, the industry generated US $400.7 million from 252,761 arrivals, marking the highest earnings for any January on record.

This represents a 10.7% increase from December 2024 and a 17.2% rise compared to January 2023. The January 2025 earnings are the highest since December 2019, when the industry earned US $455.5 million during its recovery from the Easter Sunday attacks, prior to the pandemic-related downturn.

Sri Lanka’s tourism sector aims to break records in 2025 by attracting 3.0 million visitors and generating US $3.0 billion in income, the highest since 2018. After five years of setbacks due to crises, including the collapse of the sector from 2020 to 2022, the industry is on track for a full recovery.

In 2024, tourism earnings reached US $3,168.6 million, a 53.2% increase from 2023, with just under 2.1 million arrivals.

The government is ramping up promotional campaigns to meet the ambitious 2025 target, focusing on both traditional source markets and new markets, where Sri Lanka offers a diverse range of experiences to attract more visitors.
