Passengers on a Virgin Australia flight from Sydney to Brisbane were left terrified yesterday after the cabin pressure dropped shortly after takeoff.
The plane descended from 37,000 feet to less than 10,000 feet, according to a Sky News report.
Flight VA993 from Sydney to Brisbane experienced a loss of cabin pressure shortly after takeoff, and about 40 minutes later, the oxygen masks were quickly deployed and the plane suddenly descended.
Flight radar data showed that the plane reached a maximum altitude of 37,000 feet at around 9pm and then flew down to 8,775 feet.
The plane remained at that level for the rest of the time it took to land safely in Brisbane.
Footage showed oxygen masks hanging from the upper cabins and flight attendants working to keep passengers calm.
However, when the flight finally returned to normal, passengers applauded and thanked the flight attendants.
A Virgin Australia spokeswoman said the flight crew followed standard operating procedures and took the appropriate steps to descend to a lower altitude.
Virgin Australia said safety remains its top priority, and the situation is being reviewed in line with safety standards.
