Russian ambassador Levan S. Dhagarian has accused that Latvia, a country of the European Union, has blocked the sending of free fertilizers to Sri Lanka for more than two years.
It is said that the ship carrying 55,000 metric tons of potassium chloride fertilizer arrived at Colombo port yesterday morning.
This stock, which was granted by Russia under the World Food Program, is to be distributed to the farmers of Sri Lanka, and it is reported that more than 30,000 metric tons were allocated to rice farmers and the rest to coconut farmers.
It is revealed that Ambassador Dzhagaryan stated that this fertilizer stock, which is part of a shipment of 260,000 metric tons, was held at the port of Riga from 2022 due to Western sanctions against Russia.
The shipment of this fertilizer was waiting for its arrival for more than two and a half years and unfortunately, it was blocked in Latvia, a country of the European Union, due to the illegal sanctions imposed against the Russian Federation, but finally, the shipment reached the port of Colombo, the ambassador said.
It was revealed that he thanked the Government of Sri Lanka, United Nations agencies and Urlacher Group for their support to facilitate the distribution.
