

Sri Lankan middle-distance runner Tharushi Abhisheka has won the gold medal in the women’s 1500m event at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships held in Hong Kong, marking a significant achievement for Sri Lanka in junior athletics.

The athlete, who hails from Matale and developed her sporting career at Wickramabahu National School in Gampola, delivered an impressive performance to secure first place, adding another international title to her growing list of accomplishments.
Coached by Buddhika Nuwan, Abhisheka has steadily risen through the ranks in both the 800m and 1500m events. After finishing fourth in the 800m at the Asian U20 Championships in Dubai in 2024, she claimed gold in the 800m at the Asian U18 Athletics Championships before achieving her latest success in Hong Kong.
Her latest victory further strengthens her reputation as one of Sri Lanka’s most promising young athletes and highlights her continued progress on the Asian athletics stage.
