Australia’s electric vehicle market has hit another major milestone, with Tesla recording its strongest July sales on record as EV demand continues to surge.

New data shows battery electric vehicles accounted for more than one in five new car sales in July, bringing EVs closer than ever to matching traditional petrol-powered vehicles.

Tesla and Polestar delivered a combined 4,921 electric vehicles during the month, more than four times the number sold in July last year, driven largely by strong demand for the updated Model Y.

The sales boom comes as Australians increasingly turn to electric vehicles amid higher petrol prices and growing confidence in EV technology.

Industry analysts say the latest figures confirm Australia’s rapid shift towards electrified transport, with EVs maintaining record market share for a second consecutive month.
