The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) will launch a new system in August to issue temporary driving licenses to tourists at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake.
Commissioner General Kamal Amarasinghe stated that the program is in its final implementation stage.
He said that several legal procedures are currently being finalized before the system becomes operational.
Under the new scheme, tourists can obtain temporary driving licenses valid for 14 or 30 days.
Amarasinghe also noted that tourists staying for longer periods will be eligible to apply for regular driving licenses valid for up to eight years.
