The Department of Motor Traffic has expanded its temporary driving licence service at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) to include Sri Lankan citizens and dual citizens.
Previously, the service was mainly available at the Werahera office and was later introduced at the BIA office on 3rd of August 2025, primarily to cater to foreign nationals holding valid foreign driving licences.
Under the expanded arrangement, Sri Lankan citizens and dual citizens with valid foreign driving licences can now also obtain temporary driving licences through the Department of Motor Traffic office at BIA.
The service is provided upon payment of the prescribed fees in accordance with the Motor Vehicle (Driving Licence) Fee Regulations, as amended by the Government Gazette Extraordinary No. 2463/04 dated 17th of November 2025.
At present, temporary driving licences are issued at the Werahera office and the BIA office, with authorities indicating that the facility will be extended to district offices in the future to improve public access.
