After a week on the run, a 19-year-old man accused of breaking into a popular Darwin tourist attraction and causing extensive damage has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses.
Northern Territory Police’s Strike Force Trident and Dog Operations Unit tracked down Jeremy Peckham at a residence in Malak around 2:15 p.m. yesterday, apprehending him without incident.
Crocodylus Park reported that the crime spree, which occurred around midnight last Thursday, resulted in approximately $15,000 in damages. The suspect allegedly entered the premises unlawfully, interfered with a crocodile, stole a Holden Rodeo ute, and used it to ram through multiple gates. The stolen vehicle was later found burned out at Casuarina Beach. Authorities say he also damaged two other vehicles and attempted to steal two more.
Park manager Emily Moyes described the incident as a major setback for the privately run facility. CCTV footage captured the suspect picking up a 65-centimeter crocodile, taking selfies with it, and then releasing it. The reptile managed to escape and went missing within the park.
“(We’re) very lucky that this individual didn’t decide to take the crocodile with him,” Moyes said. Footage also appeared to show the suspect running over a family of ducks before fleeing in the stolen ute.
Peckham has been charged with burglary, property damage, trespassing, theft, and interfering with protected wildlife. He also faces multiple driving offenses, including driving without consent, operating a vehicle as a learner without supervision, and failing to display L plates.
He appeared in Darwin Local Court today and was remanded in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for Friday.
