Skype, the pioneering video calling platform, has decided to end its service after revolutionizing internet-based communication.
Founded in 2003 by engineers in Tallinn, Estonia, Skype introduced a new way to make calls over the Internet instead of using traditional landlines.
In 2005, eBay acquired Skype and developed it into a full-fledged video calling service.
Later, in 2011, Microsoft purchased Skype for $8.5 billion, announcing at the time that the platform had 170 million users.
However, in May, Microsoft revealed that Skype would be retired, with some of its services transitioning to Microsoft Teams.
The company stated that users could switch to Microsoft Teams using their existing Skype accounts.
Microsoft attributed this decision to a steady decline in Skype users, driven by the rise of newer video technologies like Zoom and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
