Tamim Rahman indicted in LPL match-fixing attempt, agrees to plead guilty

The Attorney General today filed indictments before Colombo High Court Judge Udesh Ranatunga against Tamim Rahman, owner of the Dambulla Thunders cricket team, for allegedly attempting to influence a player to fix a match during last year’s Lanka Premier League (LPL).

The court subsequently ordered Rahman’s release on Rs. 200,000 cash bail and two sureties of Rs. 10 million each.

Appearing on behalf of the accused, President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa informed the court that Rahman, a Bangladeshi national with British citizenship, had already been arrested, remanded, and later released on bail. He added that his client had been compelled to remain in Sri Lanka for over one and a half years, which had severely affected his personal and business affairs.

Counsel further noted that the accused was prepared to plead guilty to the charges and requested that the case be concluded expeditiously, saying that formal representations had already been made to the Attorney General both verbally and in writing.

Representing the Attorney General, the State Counsel stated that more time was needed to obtain instructions regarding the accused’s representations.

Accordingly, the case was fixed for further hearing on 8th of December .
