Tamil Nadu CM demands greater state powers from centre

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is expected to move a State Autonomy resolution in the legislative assembly today.

The resolution seeks to urge the Indian central government to grant more powers to state governments.

This move follows several previous resolutions from the Tamil Nadu Assembly criticizing central government policies.

One such resolution opposed the Waqf (Amendment) Act and called for its repeal.

On April 4, CM Stalin informed the Assembly that the President had rejected the state’s resolution seeking exemption from NEET.

Stalin called the rejection of the NEET resolution a “dark chapter in federalism.”

The Assembly had also passed a resolution demanding the retrieval of Katchatheevu island from Sri Lanka.

The autonomy resolution comes after a Supreme Court ruling declared the Governor’s delay in assenting to ten re-enacted state bills as “illegal and erroneous in law.”

These bills, some pending since 2020, became law following the Supreme Court verdict.

CM Stalin described the court’s decision as a “victory for all states in India” and shared the news proudly in the Assembly.
