‘Tamil Genocide Monument’ inaugurated in Canada amid protests

A controversial monument commemorating Tamil civilians killed during the final stages of Sri Lanka’s civil war was officially unveiled on Saturday at Chinguacousy Park in Brampton, Canada, despite strong objections from the Sri Lankan government.

The 4.8-meter stainless steel structure, approved by the Brampton City Council earlier this year, has sparked diplomatic tensions, with Colombo criticizing it as promoting a “false narrative.”

Canadian Justice Minister Gary Anandasangaree defended the monument, saying it honors “thousands of innocent lives lost” and highlights “the resilience of global Tamil communities.”

In response, Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry has requested urgent information from its High Commission in Ottawa regarding the event. The situation mirrors a similar diplomatic protest in August 2024, when Sri Lanka summoned Canada’s envoy over the monument’s foundation stone ceremony.
