Australia’s housing affordability crisis has reached a new milestone, with home ownership in Sydney falling to its lowest level in more than seven decades.

New analysis shows the proportion of Sydney residents living in homes they own has dropped to 59.9 per cent in 2025, marking the first time the figure has fallen below 60 per cent since the 1950s.
Experts say soaring property prices, higher borrowing costs, and affordability pressures are making it increasingly difficult for many Australians, especially younger buyers, to enter the market.
The trend is creating a growing divide across the country, with states such as Queensland and Western Australia recording increases in home ownership as buyers look for more affordable options outside Sydney.
Despite the challenges, analysts say the dream of owning a home is still possible, with increased housing supply and support measures helping some first-home buyers enter the market.
For many Australians, however, Sydney’s latest figures highlight the growing pressure of the nation’s housing affordability challenge.
