Sydney shooting prompts plans to tighten firearms laws

The government is moving to tighten firearms laws following the tragic shootings at Sydney’s Bondi Beach.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the government will take all necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. He added that discussions at today’s Cabinet meeting will focus on limiting the number of firearms licenses an individual can hold and introducing a license review period, among other measures.

The attacks, carried out by two gunmen, have left 16 people dead—including a 10-year-old girl—and injured 40 others.

The perpetrators have been identified as 50-year-old Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram. Sajid Akram arrived in Australia on a student visa in 1998, while his son was born in Australia and came under the attention of Australian security forces in 2019 for suspected involvement with an Islamic terrorist organization.

Authorities have also confirmed that Sajid Akram held a firearms license for hunting since 2015.
