Sydney NYE fireworks at risk mid train strike

New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb has voiced “grave concerns” about the safety of holding Sydney’s New Year’s Eve fireworks during a train strike and may recommend their cancellation.

On Friday, Webb explained that NSW police manage the event each year with the expectation that 250,000 people can enter and leave the city safely.

She stressed that safe departures rely heavily on available transport, particularly trains. “If trains aren’t running and people can’t leave the city, I have serious concerns about the risks to public safety. Families could be stranded in the city with no way to get home,” Webb told reporters.

“I haven’t ruled out recommending to the government that the fireworks be canceled, it’s a serious matter,” Webb stated.

She emphasized that without public transport, ensuring safety would be impossible. Canceling the fireworks, she said, remains a necessary option to consider due to the potential risks to public safety.

Premier Chris Minns stated that the government would carefully consider any advice provided by the police.

“This is why we’re in court trying to halt the industrial action, the stakes are significant,” Minns said. “There are still a few steps before a final decision is made, but as I’ve mentioned, we will fully heed the advice of NSW police and the police commissioner.”
