The $39 million cycleway ramp on the Sydney Harbour Bridge has officially opened, providing a three-metre-wide route that connects the CBD via Kent Street, extends east through the Oxford Street Cycleway, and links west via the ANZAC Bridge.
The ramp aims to improve access to Sydney’s only cross-harbour bike route east of Iron Cove and is expected to attract more cyclists from the city’s north-east.
“This ramp is a long-overdue improvement for cyclists while being an architecturally sensitive addition to Bradfield’s famous Coathanger,” said Graham. “Bike traffic across the Harbour Bridge has surged in recent years, and this ramp will unlock even more by delivering equality of access.”
Granite used on the ramp was sourced from Moruya, the same location as the granite for the bridge’s pylons. The 1,500 bronze balustrades are made from the same alloy as the Sydney Opera House bronze, and the ramp is painted in the bridge’s iconic grey.
About 130,000 granite pavers on the ramp form an artwork of an intertwining eel by Aboriginal artists Jason Wing and Maddie Gibbs, honoring the cultural connection to the Gadigal and Cammeraygal people.
