The suspect accused of raping a female specialist trainee doctor at Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital has been arrested.
Police identified the suspect as Kiribandalage Nilantha Madhuranga Ratnayake, also known as Kiribandalage Nilantha Madura Ratnayake, a resident of Navanagara in Galnewa.
Reports indicate that he had been released from remand just two days prior in connection with another case.
Investigations revealed that the 34-year-old suspect had previously been a chivaradhari (a person who wears a Buddhist robe).
He later deserted military service and was apprehended by a special police team in Galnewa this morning.
After raping the female doctor, the suspect fled with one of her two mobile phones. Police tracked him using signals from the other phone to locate the missing device.
Due to the absence of mobile signals near Aukana railway station, the police launched a search operation in the surrounding area.
As a result, they managed to arrest the suspect while he was hiding in Elabadugama, Galnewa.
Meanwhile, the Government Medical Officers’ Association staged a symbolic island-wide strike today in protest of the incident.
