Suspect arrested at Bandaranaike International airport with smuggled cigarettes

An individual has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake for attempting to smuggle 3,200 sticks of foreign-made cigarettes, concealed in 16 cartons.


Acting on a tip-off received this morning (07), officers from the Airport Unit of the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) carried out a raid and apprehended the suspect, who had arrived from Dubai.


The arrested suspect has been identified as a 50-year-old resident of the Galewela area.


Further investigations into the smuggling attempt are being carried out by the Police Narcotics Bureau.
