Surge in childhood myopia sparks concerns over phone use

Experts are raising concerns about the rapid increase in vision problems among Australian children, potentially linked to the rise in screen time.

With the new school year approaching, parents are strongly encouraged to include eye tests as part of their back-to-school preparations due to growing concerns among optometrists.

Perth mother Shelley Bernstein has made eye tests an annual routine for her children, ensuring they start each school year with clear vision.

During their last eye test, the optometrist discovered that both of Shelley’s daughters needed glasses.

Shelley noted, “It just makes the world of difference if your kid can read easily or see the board easily.”

New data from Bupa Optical reveals a concerning statistic: 27% of children tested in 2022 were diagnosed with myopia, or short-sightedness.
