Former State Intelligence Service chief, Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay, remains under medical care at the Colombo National Hospital after being admitted while in detention, following a hunger strike launched over allegations of inhumane treatment during his custody.
According to reports, Sallay began refusing food and water in protest against what he described as cruel treatment by Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers, prompting concerns over his health and eventual hospitalization under the protection of CID and Special Task Force personnel.
His wife has appealed to CID Director Shani Abeysekara to allow his lawyers to meet him, stating that legal and psychological support may help persuade him to end the life-threatening protest.
Meanwhile, several opposition parties and members of the Maha Sangha launched an indefinite Satyagraha campaign in front of the Fort Railway Station, condemning his continued detention and the alleged treatment he has faced while in custody. Representatives from parties including the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, National Freedom Front, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya and Sarvajana Balaya took part in the demonstration.
