Supreme Court removes obstacles to judicial appointments

Colombo,12 th of December A lawyer has filed a fundamental rights petition asking the Constitutional Council to approve the recommendation made by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe to appoint the current President of the Court of Appeal, Mr. Nishanka Bandula Karunaratne. A Supreme Court judge was today dismissed with costs by the Supreme Court.

A three-judge Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Prithi Padman Surasena, Achala Vengappuli and Mahinda Samayawardena ordered the petitioner to pay an amount of 10 million rupees. 15 lakhs to the three members of the Constituent Assembly.

With this Supreme Court decision, there is no obstacle for the President and the Constitutional Council to appoint judges to the Supreme Court.
