Supreme court confirms death sentence for Vaas Gunawardena, others

Colombo Chief Judge Aditya Patabandige confirmed to the defendants that the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence issued by the Colombo High Court’s three-member bench.

Former DIG Vaas Gunawardena and his son Ravindu Gunawardena were among the five accused presented to court by prison officials on 20th of December.

The Supreme Court rejected the defendants’ appeal, affirming the original High Court decision regarding the murder of businessman Mohammad Shyam.

The defense lawyer noted that the Supreme Court had not specified a date for the execution of the sentence.

The lawyer emphasized the significance of setting an execution date, particularly if the defendants seek a presidential pardon.

Judge Patabandige clarified that the authority to decide on the execution date rests solely with the Supreme Court and not with him.
