Super fund issues warning to customers following post office break-in

A super fund with over one million members has warned that some customers’ personal or financial information may have been stolen following a series of break-ins at the Melbourne General Post Office (GPO).

Australia Post confirmed that four break-ins occurred between July 6 and July 17 at the back-of-house area used for sorting mail and distributing letters into PO Boxes. On three occasions, offenders forced entry, while on the fourth attempt, they left after being deterred by enhanced security measures.

Mercer Super and Virgin Money Super advised that their PO Boxes at the Melbourne GPO might have been targeted. Mercer Super stated it is possible letters containing sensitive member information were stolen. They urged anyone who sent mail to their Melbourne GPO PO Box between July 1 and July 17 and has not received a response or seen a transaction update to contact them directly.

While the exact number of affected members is unknown, Mercer Super confirmed the impact is limited to those who mailed documents during this period and have not received acknowledgments. So far, there is no evidence that any super accounts have been compromised, and no stolen data has appeared publicly or been sold.

Australia Post has increased security measures at the Bourke Street facility ahead of its planned move to a new office in August. The organization apologized for the inconvenience and informed potentially affected customers about the unauthorized access.

Victoria Police are investigating the break-ins, but no arrests have been made. The public is encouraged to provide information to Crime Stoppers.
