Stricter access to Paracetamol after overdose surge

Starting Saturday, Australians will face new restrictions on purchasing paracetamol following a rise in overdoses.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) introduced these changes in May 2023 to reduce the risk of liver damage and intentional overdoses.

Under the new rules, the maximum pack size for paracetamol sold outside pharmacies will be reduced from 20 to 16 tablets or capsules.

Additionally, all general-sale paracetamol must be in blister packaging, and retailers are encouraged to limit purchases to one pack per customer.

These regulations also apply to medications containing paracetamol, such as cold and flu treatments.

Packs containing more than 50 tablets must now be sold under a pharmacist’s supervision.

In Queensland and Western Australia, customers will need to consult a pharmacist if they wish to buy more than 16 tablets.
