President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has emphasised the importance of building a nation where Sinhalese, Tamil, and Muslim communities live together in harmony and brotherhood, reaffirming that the steps taken toward national unity will not be reversed under any circumstances.
He made these remarks while attending the “Kamban Festival” at Ramakrishna Hall, Wellawatte, one of the key literary and cultural events of the Tamil community in Sri Lanka. The President was welcomed in accordance with traditional Hindu rituals upon his arrival.
Addressing the gathering, President Dissanayake highlighted the vital role of literature and culture in shaping a new society grounded in humanity, unity, and mutual respect.
In recognition of his efforts to promote unity and equality among all communities, he was conferred with the prestigious Kamban Award, according to the President’s Media Division.
The All Ceylon Kamban Kazhagam, established in Jaffna in 1980 in honour of the renowned Tamil poet Kamban, organises the annual festival to inspire younger generations through cultural values and patriotism. The event also honours individuals who have made significant contributions to society, regardless of ethnicity or religion.
Several distinguished guests attended the ceremony, including Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekaran, former Malaysian Minister M. S. Aravanan, Indian political figure K. Annamalai, renowned liver transplant specialist Mohamed Rela, Court of Appeal Judge P. Sasimahendran, and former Judge Vishvanadan, among others.
