Starlink internet set to launch for local users following One-Week Inspection

The Starlink satellite internet service will be made available to Sri Lankan customers following a one-week inspection period, according to TRCSL Director General Bandula Herath.

Herath stated that the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) had issued the necessary licences in July 2024 to authorize Starlink’s operations in the country.

By December 2024, TRCSL had approved five main tariff packages for Starlink’s satellite broadband services.

Several rounds of discussions were held between TRCSL and Starlink Services, LLC to finalize data collection mechanisms for technological security and taxation purposes.

All necessary preliminary arrangements for the launch of the service have now been completed.

A total of 112 Starlink equipment units have been imported, and the first 12 units will be distributed to local customers by the end of this week.

Once distributed, the Starlink satellite internet service will be activated for the initial 12 users.

The TRCSL and the Ministry of Defence will jointly supervise the initial operations to ensure compliance with technical and security standards.

After the one-week trial period, the TRCSL will assess the performance and take the required steps to continue Starlink’s services in Sri Lanka.
