SriLankan Airlines Flight UL606, operating from Colombo to Sydney, safely returned to Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) early Friday (12) after reportedly being struck by lightning shortly after takeoff.

According to reports, passengers heard a loud bang during the flight and flames were briefly seen coming from one of the aircraft’s engines. The situation was quickly brought under control, and passengers were informed that the aircraft had experienced a lightning strike.

Flight crew later advised that one engine had sustained minor damage and, as a precautionary measure, the aircraft was unable to continue its journey to Sydney. The flight subsequently returned to Colombo, where it landed safely without any further incident.

The professionalism and calm response of the flight crew were widely praised, with all passengers and crew members remaining safe throughout the emergency situation. No injuries were reported.

As of 2:05 a.m., passengers remained onboard the aircraft at BIA while airline officials arranged further assistance. Food and refreshments were provided as preparations were made for the next steps in their journey.
