SriLankan Cargo achieves South Asia’s first IATA certification for lithium battery handling

SriLankan Cargo has made history by becoming South Asia’s first airline cargo division to receive the prestigious CEIV Lithium Batteries Certification from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

This certification places SriLankan Cargo among an elite group of global carriers recognized for excellence in handling lithium battery shipments.

Awarded after a comprehensive audit, the certification highlights SriLankan Cargo’s adherence to the highest standards in safety, documentation, training, and operations.

Head of Cargo Chaminda Perera described the achievement as a milestone that demonstrates the airline’s capability in safely transporting lithium and sodium-ion batteries, as well as battery-powered equipment.

The certification also opens up new revenue opportunities by eliminating operational barriers in battery transport, especially within the growing e-commerce sector.

Brendan Sullivan of IATA praised the airline’s commitment, noting the importance of safe battery transport in an era of increasing global demand.

The audit covered critical areas such as infrastructure, personnel training, customer management, and safety protocols, ensuring SriLankan Cargo’s readiness for complex cargo operations.

With this achievement, SriLankan Cargo strengthens its credibility among logistics partners and customers, gaining a competitive edge in the global battery supply chain.

The certification is expected to benefit Sri Lanka’s import and export sectors by improving service standards and operational efficiency.

Operating across more than 30 destinations in 21 countries, SriLankan Cargo continues to offer extensive global reach through both its own network and partner collaborations.
