The earlier government initially considered privatizing the airline but later explored alternative approaches to address its financial struggles.
Following the presidential election on21st of September 2024, the new administration decided to prioritize developing the airline without privatization.
Authorities have been asked to present a comprehensive business plan to achieve this goal.
Despite past financial challenges, SriLankan Airlines showed signs of recovery in 2023, reporting a profit of Rs. 1.124 billion for the nine months ending on 31st of
December. The positive financial performance has raised hopes for the airline’s future under the new development-focused strategy.
