Sri Pada Pilgrimage season draws to a close

The Sri Pada Pilgrimage season, which began on the Unduwap Full Moon Poya Day on 14th of December 2024, will officially conclude with religious observances marking the end of the sacred journey.

The season commenced with the ceremonial transfer of the sacred relics casket, “Sadhatuka Karaduwa,” the “Samandeva Prathimawa,” and other venerated ornaments from the historic Sri Pada Temple in Galpotthawala, Pelmadulla, to the Sri Pada Uda Maluwa.

Over the past five months, hundreds of thousands of devotees from across the country and abroad participated in the annual pilgrimage, braving long climbs to pay homage at the sacred peak.

The pilgrimage, steeped in centuries of religious and cultural significance, is one of Sri Lanka’s most revered spiritual traditions.

Authorities ensured the safety and convenience of pilgrims through increased security, sanitation, and medical services along the routes.

As the season concludes, the sacred items will be respectfully returned to their original resting place in a ceremonial procession.

The end of the pilgrimage season also symbolizes a time of reflection, gratitude, and spiritual renewal for many followers.

Religious leaders praised the devotion and discipline shown by pilgrims throughout the season.

The Sri Pada season will begin again with the next Unduwap Full Moon Poya in December 2025.
