Sri Lanka has recorded a decline in tourism revenue during the first five months of this year compared to the same period in 2025.

According to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, tourism earnings from January to May reached 1.36 billion US dollars, down from 1.54 billion US dollars recorded during the same period last year.

The figures show an 11.9 percent drop in tourism income, highlighting challenges facing one of the country’s key foreign exchange sectors.

Tourism revenue in May alone also declined, with earnings falling to 155.7 million US dollars compared to 164.1 million US dollars in May 2025.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka saw a strong increase in foreign remittance inflows, with 3.9 billion US dollars received during the first five months of this year.

The Central Bank said remittances have grown significantly compared to the 3.1 billion US dollars recorded during the same period last year, providing a boost to the country’s economy.
