Sri Lankan javelin star Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage is continuing to rewrite the nation’s sporting history as he targets an elusive Olympic medal in athletics field events.

The 23-year-old produced a sensational performance at the Rome Diamond League, recording a massive throw of 92.62 metres to set a new national record in the men’s javelin throw.

His outstanding effort secured victory over some of the world’s leading athletes, including Anderson Peters of Grenada, Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, Thomas Röhler of Germany, and Curtis Thompson of the United States.

The record-breaking throw is now the second-longest ever by an Asian athlete and the eighth-best in world history, highlighting one of the finest performances in the sport.

With this achievement, Tharanga has firmly established himself among the world’s elite javelin throwers and emerged as a strong medal contender for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

His performance has also reignited hopes of Olympic success for Sri Lanka, which has so far produced only two Olympic medalists—Duncan White in 1948 and Susanthika Jayasinghe in 2000.
