Sri Lanka’s botanical gardens generate over Rs. 1 billion in revenue in 2025

The Department of National Botanic Gardens announced that Sri Lanka’s botanical gardens generated more than Rs. 1 billion in revenue last year, reaching Rs. 1.394 billion — a 7% increase compared to 2024 — despite the impact of Cyclone Ditwah.

The increase in revenue was largely driven by the growth in tourism, with more than two million visitors recorded across all botanical gardens in the country. Among them, the Royal Botanic Gardens Peradeniya attracted over one million visitors.

Officials said revenue was generated through entrance fees, plant sales, and various on-site services, highlighting the important role botanical gardens play in supporting Sri Lanka’s tourism sector and the national economy.
