Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Arun Hemachandra confirmed that no Sri Lankans have been harmed in the violent unrest sweeping through Kathmandu and other parts of Nepal.
Hemachandra said he personally contacted members of the Sri Lankan community in Nepal to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
“There are 22 Sri Lankan students in Nepal and a total of 99 nationals, including Embassy staff and residents. I was relieved to learn that none of them have been affected,” he stated.
The Minister explained that the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kathmandu has created WhatsApp groups and circulated emergency contact numbers to maintain close communication with citizens.
Sri Lankans in Nepal have been advised to stay indoors, avoid protest-hit areas, and comply strictly with curfew regulations.
“I assured our citizens that the Government of Sri Lanka stands ready to provide further assistance, including evacuation if necessary,” Hemachandra added.
He also commended the Sri Lankan mission in Kathmandu, praising the Chargé d’Affaires and Embassy staff for their “tireless work and dedication at this critical moment.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism will continue to monitor the situation closely and take necessary measures to safeguard Sri Lankans overseas, Hemachandra said.
