Sri Lankan youth arrested at airport for smuggling Rs. 3.5M worth of cigarettes from Dubai

A 21-year-old Sri Lankan youth who arrived from Dubai via Qatar was arrested by the Bandaranaike International Airport Police for attempting to smuggle in foreign cigarettes valued at over Rs. 3.5 million.

Acting on prior information, airport police apprehended the suspect as he attempted to exit the airport after completing immigration and customs checks.

Upon inspection, authorities discovered 20,000 sticks of one cigarette brand and 3,600 sticks of another concealed in his luggage.

The suspect, a resident of Yatiyantota, is scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court.

Investigations are being carried out under the supervision of OIC Airport Police Elmo Malcolm.
