A 24-year-old Sri Lankan student in Bengaluru has been targeted in an online sextortion scheme by an unidentified individual who initially contacted him through Instagram.
According to the police case, the suspect befriended the student on Instagram and later moved the conversation to WhatsApp. During video calls, the accused secretly captured the victim’s personal photos and private videos without his consent.
The suspect then demanded money in exchange for deleting the content. When the student refused, the individual threatened to share the videos with his friends and family and upload them on social media.
Fearing the repercussions, the student transferred Rs. 36,000 to the suspect. Despite the payment, the accused continued to demand additional money, threatening to make the videos public if further payments were not made.
The continuous threats caused the victim severe mental distress, prompting him to file a police complaint. Authorities have registered a case and launched an investigation into the matter.
