Sri Lankan passport falls six places in latest global rankings

The Sri Lankan passport has fallen six spots to 97th place in the Henley Passport Index 2025 Global Ranking, released on 11th of September 2025.

Earlier this year, Sri Lanka had shown improvement, climbing from 96th to 91st place, but the latest update marks a decline below even its 2024 position.

Sri Lanka’s visa-free access has dropped from 42 destinations to 41, placing it alongside Iran in the 97th spot out of 105 rankings.

The Henley Passport Index measures global mobility by assessing how many destinations passport holders can enter without obtaining a visa beforehand.

In the global context, the U.S. passport has also weakened, dropping to 12th place—its lowest position in the 20-year history of the index.

Singapore continues to lead the world with the most powerful passport, followed closely by South Korea and Japan, while Afghanistan remains at the bottom with the least travel freedom.

Recognized as the most authoritative measure of global mobility, the Henley Passport Index evaluates 199 passports against 227 destinations, drawing on two decades of data and analysis.
