Cabinet approval has been granted to launch a new initiative this year that will allow Sri Lankan nationals to apply for passports online through Sri Lankan diplomatic missions abroad.
The project aims to simplify and accelerate the passport application process for Sri Lankans living overseas by digitizing services at selected foreign missions.
To support the initiative, a proposal was submitted to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which has agreed to fund the project covering 20 diplomatic missions.
The project includes the establishment of biometric enrolment centres, provision of equipment, system integration with the Department of Immigration and Emigration, and technical support to ensure smooth online processing.
The joint proposal was submitted by the Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment and the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs.
Once implemented, the system will provide faster, more convenient passport services to Sri Lankans abroad through modern digital technology.
