Sri Lanka is considering expanding duty-free benefits for citizens working overseas, with the aim of providing greater support to migrant workers and their families.
A high-level discussion was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to explore improvements to the current duty-free allowance system.
Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Arun Hemachandra said the proposals include simpler customs procedures, linking benefits with official remittance records, and improving access to financial facilities.
The government is also working to strengthen coordination between the Finance Ministry, Central Bank, Sri Lanka Customs, banks, and Lanka Remit.
Officials say the new measures are designed to recognise the important contribution of overseas Sri Lankans and make duty-free benefits more accessible and transparent.
